Around the Council table and in conversations with City staff, a theme has come up again and again: How do we talk about our city? Too often, our focus lands on what’s broken, what’s lacking, or what needs fixing. And yes, those are important discussions. We can’t ignore our challenges. But if that’s all we talk about, we miss something essential.

Because Aberdeen is full of good things. Beautiful things. Things worth celebrating.

Lately, we’ve been conducting SWOT analyses (that’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) for different areas of town. It’s a strategic tool that helps us take stock and plan for the future. And what keeps standing out to me, over and over again, are the strengths. The things that make Aberdeen special.

Here are just a few of the reasons I love this town:

Our Natural Beauty

We’re lucky to live in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, just a short drive from ocean beaches, mountain hikes, rainforest walks, and sparkling lakes. But you don’t even have to leave town to find beauty. Our riverfront trails, neighborhood parks, and unexpected wildlife (did you hear about the orcas recently?) remind me that nature is part of daily life here.

Historic Charm

Aberdeen has some truly stunning old homes, lovingly maintained and full of character. I often take the long way home just to admire them. These homes are living reminders of our rich past and the pride our neighbors take in preserving it.

The Bloom Team

If you’ve strolled downtown and admired the flowers in the planters, you’ve seen the Bloom Team’s handiwork. This amazing group of volunteers works tirelessly to bring beauty and color to our streets. They do it out of love for the city, for their neighbors, and for the little joys that flowers can bring.

A Colorful History

From timber barons and sawmills to grunge music and infamous tales, Aberdeen has a history that’s anything but boring. Our past is gritty, fascinating, and uniquely ours. That makes our present all the more interesting.

The People

Aberdeen people are something else. Resilient, no-nonsense, and full of heart. I’ve seen neighbors mow lawns for each other, donate anonymously to families in need, and show up for one another in ways that never make the headlines but make a world of difference.

The Creative Spirit

The Unplugged museum. The quirky downtown art. The murals, music, and art makers. Aberdeen’s creativity runs deep, and our support for local arts is a powerful force that connects and inspires.

Grays Harbor College

I got both my associate and bachelor’s degrees at GHC, and I know how vital it is to our community. The college doesn’t just educate. It uplifts, adapts, and opens doors for students of all ages.

Even the Weather

Yes, really! I love our grey, rainy days. There’s something cozy and comforting about curling up with a blanket, a book, and a cup of cocoa or tea. And when the sun does come out? That’s just the cherry on top.

Here’s my ask: Let’s start shifting how we talk about Aberdeen. Let’s name and nurture what we love. Let’s make space for hope, pride, and momentum alongside the honest conversations about what still needs work.

What do you love about Aberdeen?

Drop a comment, share a memory, or tag a photo that shows off your favorite place or person in town. Let’s build a conversation, and a community, around what’s working and worth celebrating.

Let’s carry it forward, together.
